A last...

Tonight is my last night in Seattle.

When I moved back to my hometown two years ago, I never thought I would leave. Seattle is where I want to get married, raise a family. I loved growing up here, with all the green and the water. I didn't know any better at the time that rain and gray skies aren't the norm in other parts of the country.

It's strange to think that tomorrow I'll be in a different state.
A state I swore I would never live in again.
I'm definitely eating my words. :)

Change is good, and I've never been one to shy away from a new adventure. Take a look at the last five years of my life...I moved to Taiwan twice, moved to DC twice, and lived in Seattle twice.

I guess that's why I'm surprised with my conflicting emotions. Excitement and fear. Positive and negative. There are so many things in Salt Lake that I'm excited about--awesome new roommate, super close friends from teaching in Taiwan, mission buddies, BYU friends, and old roommates. But I'm sad to leave my family and friends I have here.

And I'm sad from all the things I'll be missing out on!

But that's life. Life moves on, and you learn to move on with it.

So here's to change and adventure! To looking forward to the future, not knowing what it holds. To good friends and family who love generously and endlessly! To life!

Lately...

Two weeks ago today, my little jet-plane from the Emerald City brought me across the country to our nation's capital. It's hard to believe that I've already been here that long. In a lot of ways it feels like I just left yesterday. I'm amazed at all that I've done here so far.
The List
1. Saw old roommate Nikki, her husband Dave, and cute, cute baby Halli. Nikki was sweet enough to pick me up from the airport, and invited me over for dinner. There's nothing like seeing familiar faces your first day in a newish town.

2. Attended launch party of friend Brittany's design website Baker St. I admire and look up to Brittany for all that she has accomplished. We first met either my first or second year of school at BYU in a French class. Years (and missions to far off lands) later, we ended up in a couple of the same art history classes. Brittany graduated and was accepted to the prestigious Corcoran College of Art + Design. She has since been all over the world rubbing elbows with people of very high importance, learning all about textile, fashion and interior design.  Did I mention that I slightly envy her life? Did I?
Anyhow, good friend, fellow classmate and modern/contemporary art lover, Maggie, was so kind to take me. We were in HEAVEN. Words cannot express the joy I felt at seeing real live modern slashy contemporary art of someone's personal collection. The sad thing is, I don't even remember all that I saw, but I do remember thinking how tasteful the collection was, and loved how it was displayed. Maggie and I both had an opportunity to speak with the owner who so graciously opened his house for all to see, and he had some great tips of how to start one's own art collection.

3. Enjoyed the non-floweriness, of the Flower Market at the National Cathedral. Maggie and I headed to the National Cathedral on a very sunny, yet incredibly windy Saturday afternoon. We were imagining stalls and booths full of flowers (because that's one thinks of when one goes to a flower market). Yet, we were greeted by the sounds and sights of Ukraine! There was a definite lack of flowers, but the entertainment, food, and company certainly made up the difference.

{Inside the National Cathedral. I love the colors on the ceiling created by the light shining through the stained glass}
 {Dancers dressed in traditional Ukranian costume. It reminded me of the Czech Republic.}
4. Started my new job at The Smithsonian Associates.
I love being right on the mall. Yes, it's true that my office is three floors underground, but I do have my own "personal work station" or for lack of a better term: office. It's pretty exciting though I haven't had much time to do anything to it. There's a reason why they needed me--they could use three more people for the amount of work that they have. I just hope I'll get the hang of things soon!

5. Tutored inner city youth. My singles ward pairs up with an inner city ward and tutors the youth. I was paired up with a fine young man who needed someone to edit his English paper. It was fun to use my English teaching skills, and get to know him. He was hilarious! And such a good writer!

6. Went on an excursion to the fabulous outlets  in Leesburg, VABiggest surprise: I didn't buy much (way to go self-control). Second biggest surprise: mighty fine Thai food in the middle of nowhere.

7. Chatted with Gloria and Fenny via Skype video chat! I think this made my week! There's nothing like hearing from old friends, especially one's who live in foreign countries. I miss them so much, but am incredibly excited for Fenny to come to America this summer!

8. Went to the DC Temple.

It's been a full two weeks. Despite that, I'm having Seattle withdrawals. How could I not having left friends like these behind?

Moving Day (yes, it's true)

If you're getting whiplash trying to keep up with where I am, I wouldn't blame you. My neck is getting a little sore itself.

But moving day is finally here. I'm leaving the land of rain (oh, beloved Seattle) for this little out of the way town:

Many people have asked the reason for my move. It is for a job. My life isn't nearly exciting enough for it to be for any other reason. But now the fun begins...

Where will I be working?
 Perhaps it is here:
Or here:
Or maybe here:
Well, I suppose I should go ahead and tell you...
I'll be working here:

Not at the Castle, but rather slightly to the right and four stories underground.

I've been offered a position with The Smithsonian Associates, the same arm of the Smithsonian Institution where I worked as an intern. I'm excited for the new position, and for the fact that I'll be working in my field of study (Humanities).

To be perfectly honest, I'm a bit nervous about the move.
That's normal, right?

But I'm lucky enough to have some great friends in the DC area that are already making me feel welcome with facebook posts, texts, and emails. What more could a gal ask for?

Here's to new adventures in life, and to those who push us to live our dreams!

Humidity makes quite a difference...

So here I am in the great state of Utah. I got in last night, finishing my 3 day road trip from DC. Long, yes. Fun, absolutely! I was a bit worried about this road trip because I was comatose most of the time when I made the trip out to DC with my mom in January. I'm so proud of myself because I did all the driving. Through the severe weather of Maryland (it was pretty intense) to the not so severe weather of the middle states.

Did you know that America is BEAUTIFUL? I think I take it for granted. But I'm so glad that I had this chance to see part of the country that I'd never had before.

But I definitely have to say that I prefer the dryness of the west to the humidity of the east. Why are you moving to Taiwan? you may ask. Well, let's just say it's not for the weather.

Packing...

...sucks!

I'm currently packing for two trips. Above are the clothes/shoes I'm wanting to take to Taiwan. I don't think it will fit, or weight under the 50 lbs limit enforced by the airline companies. I don't leave for another 2 weeks, but this Saturday I'm road tripping out to Utah were I am catching my plane to Taiwan. So my suitcases for Taiwan have to be packed, but there are still some things I'm going to want to use in the next 2 weeks.

Tricky...very tricky.

New Place, new neighbors...

Almost three months ago I made the decision to pack up my bags, load up my car and drive the long distance from Seattle to Washington, DC. It's amazing how much has transpired over the last couple of months, and I must admit that I've grown a lot. There was obviously some lessons that I needed to learn, and I'm still going through some of the "refiners fire."

But I had the wonderful opportunity to room again with one of my most favorite roommates from BYU again. And that is what really prompted my move to the other coast. Miss Kellyn, however, married Mr. John Morris two whole weeks ago.
Dropping Miss Kellyn and John Morris at Dulles airport.
I needed to find a new place to live, and fast. And I did. And it's in Virginia. And it's great. It's pictured below:

It's cute, huh? And it was a steel. But, my first morning there, I had a little visitor as I woke up. A new neighbor if you will:
A big ol' nasty bug. This picture doesn't even begin to give it justice. I was over an inch long, and had some cool design on the back. When I turned on my table lamp, it froze. But when I turned it off, it booked it across the blinds, and almost reached my head. I freaked out. For the record, I absolutely HATE bugs. Don't ask me why. I was never bit by some horrific insect, but I do have a fear of them jumping on me and injecting me with some lethal poison. Anyways, I built up my courage and trapped my new neighbor in water bottle, ran down stairs, and deposited him on our front porch. I quickly ran inside, in case he had wings (I've been chased by killer cockroaches with wings before, and boy is it scary).
Despite the unwelcome insect, the place is pretty sweet. It's right next to some biking trails, and is in a real neighborhood. Hooray!
Here's to new places, and to new neighbors (not the insect kind).

My time abroad is coming to an end...

So, I'm not dead. I've just been travelling around Taiwan and Thailand for the last couple of weeks. I'll have some major blogging to do once I get back to the States on Thursday. It's been fabulous. I spent New Year's in Bangkok, spent the night with a hill tribe, river rafted, rode an elephant, and much much more. Till the time I can actually do a proper blog--Happy New Year!!

My bags are packed, all ready to go...

I can't believe my six months are up! Friday was my last day of teaching and it was so sad! As of tomorrow I will be homelessly wandering Taiwan, so I will be in the country enough days to get my tax break (the Taiwanese pay 20% in taxes and we only have to pay 6% if we stay in the country 180 or something like that). List of things I will be seeing:

Sun Moon Lake

Taroko Gorge

Taipei (hopefully)

It will be strange to be travelling on Christmas, but we celebrated it today. So it won't be all bad. I'll update this later with pics, etc. of our Christmas carolling and the last few days of school. I will be without Internet for a while, so this may be it for a while. But when I do get the chance, I will be able to blog about Thailand as well. It's going to be an exciting, travel-packed next couple of weeks!
Oh, and I fly home to the States on Jan. 8th, for all those who are interested.
Tak jo, ciao for now!
